About Awana

What is Awana?
Awana is fun with a purpose - to teach kids to know, love and serve the Lord Jesus Christ. Awana is Mission Hills Church midweek program for kids Preschool to High School, reaching kids for Christ the past 40 years. Bible lessons, Bible memorization, games, awards and other activities make Awana a lively weekly experience where fun and learning go hand in hand. Kids recite verses they memorize each week. Recognition and awards are given throughout the year. Games are fun and a highlight along with theme nights and special events.

5 Principles of Awana
1. Centered on the Gospel
2. Scripture Memory
3. Exciting & Fun to young people
4. Trains youth to serve our Lord
5. Built on Volunteers

The weekly program is divided into three - 30 minute periods.
  • Game Time is high energy games.
  • Council Time provides meaningful teaching that develops Biblical morals and godly character. (Jr. High & H.S. participate in an interactive Bible Study each week.)
  • Handbook Time your child will have small group interaction, deepen friendships and recite to their leader the verses they memorized that week. Recognition and awards are given throughout the year.

Awana Provides

Bible Knowledge
Awana gets kids involved in learning God's Word and developing a personal relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ. Each week kids (3-12)will have Bible lessons using puppets, audio or visual aids to convey spiritual truths to help them grow. Kids (13-18) will participate in age appropriate interactive Bible Study that develops Biblical morals and godly character. Awana kids recite verses that emphasize God's plan of salvation and how to live daily lives as Christians. They learn about missionaries and sharing Christ with others. Kids benefit from the relationships they build with their leaders.

Loving & Safe Environment
Each club is supervised by directors and leaders who willingly give of their time because of their love for the Lord and of kids.  Each leader is a believer in Christ, trained in the Awana program and screened through our church's "Live Scan" policy to provide a safe place for your child to grow.

$ Awana Bucks
Clubbers will earn one ($1) awana buck for a verse or section completed, wearing their uniform, bringing their Bible, and a parents initials. Bringing a friend is worth $5 awana bucks. Awana bucks are spent at the Awana Carnival.

Teams
Clubbers are assigned to a color team for the year. There team earns points by reciting Bible verses, bringing their Bible, wearing their uniform, and at game time. Points are totaled each week and treats are awarded to the winning team.

Club Rules
  • Wear appropriate club uniform each week (see uniform below).
  • Only 2 helps are allowed when reciting verses in each handbook section.
  • Clubbers must complete a section in their handbook within four weeks.
  • For safety reasons, children in Cubbies & Sparks (ages 3-8) may not leave with anyone other than a parent, unless prior arrangements have been made.
  • A maximum of 5 sections per night will be allowed, including reviews. If there is time after all clubbers have recited, a leader may allow a prepared clubber to recite more.
  • Inappropriate behavior will result in a clubber being removed from the activity, and possibly asked to be picked up early. They will be welcomed back the following week. Continued inappropriate behavior will require a parent or no club.
Uniform
The uniform is critical to the entire Awana program. It should include: club shirt or vest, long pants (capris ok) & tennis shoes. Please notify your leader for replacement of lost or missing parts to your uniform. Points are awarded each week and periodic inspections are given at game time. Jackets during cool evenings are recommended.
